Community Upliftment at Grootberg Lodge

Built on a vision to uplift and empower the local community, Grootberg Lodge actively supports the members of the Khoadi-//Hôas Conservancy through initiatives that focus on education, opportunity, and long-term sustainability. Most of the lodge team comes from the surrounding community, creating employment while strengthening local skills and livelihoods.

Beyond this, Grootberg Lodge is committed to expanding access to education for children in the region. One of the key projects is the ongoing refurbishment of Eduard Garoeb Primary School — one of only two primary schools serving the area. Planned upgrades include improvements to the kitchen and dormitory, as well as the addition of essential sanitation facilities and furnishings to better support the many learners who rely on the school.

A dedicated scholarship programme assists vulnerable children by helping provide boarding support, school uniforms, and essential learning materials. Learners are selected by a joint committee of community representatives and lodge management, with careful consideration given to:

Orphaned children
Large families
Single-parent households, particularly those led by women
Promoting girls’ education
Children with disabilities
Foster children

Guests and supporters are invited to contribute to the Education Fund, helping ensure that children in the conservancy have access to safe learning environments and the resources they need to thrive.

Supporting Conservation and Coexistence

Grootberg Lodge also works closely with the Namibian Lion Trust to strengthen conservation efforts across the region. As wildlife populations recover, encounters between predators and livestock have increased.

In response, the conservancy — together with Grootberg Lodge — established a Predator Fund aimed at supporting farmers affected by these challenges. Each predator sighting recorded during lodge activities contributes toward this initiative, which focuses on practical solutions such as monitoring lion movements and providing early warnings to nearby farmers. These measures help communities protect their livestock while supporting the continued recovery of Namibia’s iconic wildlife.
